Please tell us the history of Harpain Gas from its founding until today.
The Harpain family has maintained a longstanding presence in the global LPG shipping market, tracing its roots back several decades. Rimbert Harpain emerged as one of the pioneers in the Petchem trade during the early 1980s, when he successfully contracted the family’s first LPG carriers. These vessels—GAZ NORDSEE, GAZ PACIFIC (5,600 CBM each), TYCHO BRAHE (15,000 CBM), and DONAU (30,000 CBM)—were built by the esteemed Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, and deployed with great flexibility across various international gas trades.
In the 1990s, Rimbert Harpain made a strategic move to strengthen his own position into the ethylene market by commissioning the construction of his first ethylene-capable vessels under the Harpain Flag at BRAND Werft in Oldenburg: the IGLOO BERGEN and IGLOO TANA, each with a capacity of 8,300 CBM. Later renamed GASCHEM BERGEN and GASCHEM TANA, these vessels proved to be remarkably efficient and remained in active service for over two decades before being sold in 2012 and 2013, respectively.
Later in the decade, Harpain extended its footprint in the LPG/ethylene segment by contracting two 12,500 CBM carriers—CLIPPER VIKING and CLIPPER HARALD—again at Meyer Werft, this time on behalf of the Steensland/Solvang Group.
In 2003, Henrik Harpain joined the company, marking a pivotal turning point in its trajectory. At that time, the gas shipping activities of the group had become somewhat stagnant, as the Harpain Group had shifted much of its focus throughout the 1990s to the successful contracting and delivery of ultra-modern RoPax ferries on behalf of the Attica Group in Greece—most notably the SUPERFAST I and II, built at Schichau Seebeckwerft in Bremerhaven. This ambitious newbuilding program culminated in the delivery of twelve cutting-edge vessels by 2002, many of which were successfully resold through Harpain.
Recognizing a renewed opportunity in the gas sector, Henrik Harpain brought a fresh perspective and strategic vision to the company. Drawing on his deep understanding of the market and, critically, his strong network in the financial sector, he was instrumental in reinitiating the expansion of the gas fleet at a time when many operators had exited the market due to its high technical and commercial demands.
He identified that, in the early 2000s, the global gas fleet was aging and underutilized, while new investments were scarce. Meanwhile, demand was rising—driven by the rapid development of gas infrastructure in the Middle East and East Asia. Sensing a window of opportunity, he secured the financial backing necessary to begin rebuilding the fleet.
The expansion began with the acquisition of two 10,500 CBM vessels—Northern Ice and Northern Snow—from John Fredriksen. Built by Benetti in Italy, these ships featured a unique design with four stainless steel Type C tanks, giving them operational flexibility and technical robustness. Shortly thereafter, the fleet was further strengthened with the acquisition of the 22,500 CBM semi-refrigerated Queen Zenobia from Naftomar in 2006.
Simultaneously, Harpain embarked on a newbuilding project targeting the next generation of ethylene carriers. Partnering with the renowned design firm TGE, they conceived a vessel twice the size of conventional intercontinental ethylene carriers (typically 8,500–10,000 CBM). These 17,000 CBM vessels were constructed at the Rostock yard, a subsidiary of Meyer Werft, a shipyard with a distinguished history in the construction of advanced gas carriers.
Between 2010 and 2011, four vessels were delivered: GASCHEM NORDSEE, GASCHEM PACIFIC, GASCHEM ADRIATIC, and GASCHEM ANTARCTIC—their names paying homage to the original Harpain vessels of the 1980s. At their time of delivery, they were among the largest ethylene carriers in the world and immediately established a new benchmark in the market alongside four sister ships operated by Solvang.
During this period, Harpain focused intensely on commercial operations, with technical management initially outsourced to third-party providers. However, as safety standards and vetting protocols imposed by oil majors became increasingly stringent, it became clear that third-party management was insufficient to meet the high standards required. Harpain responded by enlisting Dimokratis Tatanis, a seasoned expert in tanker safety and vetting optimization, to support the technical operations.
As demands escalated, Harpain gradually assumed greater control over technical management. This led to the establishment of Harpaingas in 2013, marking a decisive step towards fully integrated operations. To ensure excellence from the outset, Harpain acquired the entire Gas Department of Chemikalien Seetransport, one of the industry’s oldest and most respected technical managers in both LPG and LNG. This experienced team was seamlessly integrated into Harpaingas, dramatically elevating operational performance and achieving an impeccable vetting record with oil majors.
In recognition of its high standards and commitment to continuous improvement, Harpaingas obtained ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications from Lloyd’s Register in 2018.
Today, Harpaingas remains dedicated to enhancing vessel performance through a dual focus on quality and cost-efficiency. While the gas shipping market has evolved into a competitive arena dominated by large-scale players, Harpain continues to seek opportunities in specialized niches. Guided by a legacy of innovation and excellence, the company remains committed to leading through technology and agility, aiming to redefine what smaller, efficient, and forward-thinking companies can achieve in a landscape shaped by global politics and shifting economic forces.
Looking ahead, HarpainGas is now entering the next chapter of its evolution. With a clear eye on future market demands, environmental standards, and operational efficiency, the company has begun the strategic, gradual phase-out of its aging fleet. This carefully managed transition is making way for the next generation of advanced gas carriers—vessels designed to meet the highest standards of sustainability, performance, and regulatory compliance. As always, Harpain is guided by its core principles: innovation, precision, and long-term partnership. In a market that has grown more competitive and capital-intensive than ever before, HarpainGas remains committed to leading not by scale, but by excellence
